Coghlan’s Ferro Rod

I have this cheap ferro rod and it throws sparks with the back of my knife. How much better would a ‘better’ ferro rod work?

I can’t get anything to spark with the included striker. How is that supposed to work? i tried using the edge and those ridges too. Nothing.
