Most people in the Archeology / Paleontology community, I feel, have a very bad sense for this sort of thing, often positing rather outlandish theories and/or overly biasing themselves towards a sort of survivorship bias -- namely the fact that the oldest fire making tools we have evidence for are pyrite and flint.
